COMMERCIAL SERVICES: TREE REMOVAL
In this project we were asked to remove rotten beech trees from a Calderdale school.
This is an example of Meripilus giganteus - also know as the giant polypore. it’s a fungus that commonly affects beech trees, causing white rot and weakening the tree’s structure, leading to unsafe and potentially dangerous breakage/tree fall.
Our initial course of action was to inspect the tree, its branches, trunk and roots, to understand the damage caused. Upon assessment it was clear that the tree needed removing - to ensure safety and avoid any further infection. This was especially important due to the location of the tree being at a school site.
The fungus itself primarily infects through wounds and damaged tissue, eventually leading to root and butt rot. While it can affect other broadleaf trees, beech tress are particularly susceptible. The pictures below show how widespread the rot was and how we safely managed both the site anf removal, for this Calderdale school.
